This is the first poem in my book “Turn Your Back on the Shore.”
I am like the ocean
I know the feel of storms
and the tension of calm
uncontrolled waves rolling
from my deepest waters
to my most distant shores
I have lazy beaches
dangerous broken shoals
secret pleasure islands
and submerged reefs of pain
I know there is debris
decaying in slow swirls
unwanted and unknown
floating upon my tides
I feel there is treasure
in the cold of my depths
I’ll never discover
I am like the ocean
I wear down the hard stuff
with stupid persistence
Ah, I see you now
You are like the ocean too
