“I first read Scott’s poetry in Pacific Longboarder Magazine many years ago. It was a very eloquent, personal statement, a quiet ode to the mystery of being in touch with the ocean and with one’s self. And it was a bit of a surprise, coming from a big manly man, one who I knew as a logger and wildland firefighter, as well as a surfer — a big surfer who rides big boards on really big waves.
I was randomly reading Scott’s poems now and then when I came across “Shapers.” I am Scott’s shaper. As I read the poem, I realized I was reading about myself! Scott has perfectly captured the essence of surfboard shaping from the very cerebral nature of it to the gritty reality of shuffling sandaled feet through foam dust.
This collection gives similar treatment to so many aspects of the surfing life, and I’m thrilled, stoked even, to have found a bit of myself in it. I think there is something in here for every surfer, or anyone who ever dreamed of surfing. Thank you, Scott.”–-Tom McNamara
“I know the author. I’ve seen him in the water for years. I had no idea that he knew my heart. Maybe it’s the universal heart of anyone who paddles out to surf. These poems are passionate and fun. If you are drawn to the ocean, you will love this book. If you aren’t, these poems will help you understand those who are.”–Michael Harrington
